USA Hockey revealed it’s roster for the upcoming 2018 IIHF World Championship over the weekend, and former-Spokane Chiefs defenseman Derek Ryan is the lone former-WHL player to make the squad. Ryan, who played for the Chiefs from 2003-2007, lead the team in points in back-to-back seasons in 2005-2006 (61) and 2006-2007 (59). The Spokane-native, who held the Chiefs’ record for fastest two goals score by one player at 0:16, saw that mark bested last season by Milos Fafrak, who scored twice in 0:14.
Ryan has played parts of the last three seasons with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and is the lone representative on the Team U.S.A. roster to have played in the Western Hockey League. Team U.S. opens 2018 IIHF Wold Championship play Friday, May 4 as they take on Team Canada, lead by former-Chiefs Head Coach Bill Peters.
