The Western Hockey League announced today that Spokane Chiefs’ forward Mitch Holmberg is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 10, 2013.
Holmberg recorded nine points on five goals and four assists to go with a +4 rating over three games in the last week, helping lead the Chiefs to a 2-1-0 record on the road in that span, and earning his second Denny’s WHL Player of the Week honors of the season.
On Wednesday, November 6th, Holmberg tallied a goal – the overtime winner – and chipped in two assists while being named the game’s 2nd Star in a 5-4 victory over the Tigers in Medicine Hat. On Friday, November 8th, Holmberg recorded his second hat trick of the season while adding an assist and earning 1st Star honors as the Chiefs defeated the Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-2. On Saturday, November 9th, Holmberg notched a goal and an assist as the Chiefs fell 3-2 to the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, B.C.
Holmberg, a product of Sherwood Park, AB, currently leads all WHL players in scoring with 23 goals and 51 points in just 21 games this season, and has recorded at least one point in 20 of the 21 games he’s played. The 20-year-old, five-year WHL veteran was the Chiefs’ first-round pick, 21st overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft. Holmberg has played 263 career regular-season games for Spokane, amassing 108 goals and 229 points.
The WHL has also nominated Tristan Jarry of the Edmonton Oil Kings for the CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Jarry, an 18-year-old from Delta, B.C., posted a 2-1-0 record with a pair of shutouts in three starts over the past week, allowing just two goals on 88 shots for a 0.67 goals-against average and a .977 save percentage in that span. On Tuesday, November 5th, Jarry stopped all 37 shots he faced and was named the game’s 1st Star in a 3-0 win in Vancouver over the Giants. On Wednesday, November 6th, Jarry turned aside all 21 shots he faced for his second consecutive shutout in a 5-0 win over the Victoria Royals. On Saturday, November 9th, Jarry made 28 saves on 30 shots and was the game’s 2nd Star in a 2-0 loss to the Rockets in Kelowna. Jarry, a Pittsburgh Penguins prospect, is in his third season in the WHL with the Oil Kings. He currently ranks second among all WHL goaltenders with a 2.07 GAA.
