Gary Peterson

The Red Deer Rebels scored two goals in both the first and second period en route to a 4-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs in Saturday afternoon’s WHL pre-season game in Kennewick, Wash.  Pavel Kousal scored the Chiefs’ lone goal 8:18 into the third period from Ondrej Najman and Jaret Anderson-Dolan.

Red Deer’s Brandon Hagel scored both of the Rebels’ goals in a 42-second span in the first at 13:17 and 13:59 to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.  Austin Pratt and Brandon Butler pushed the Rebels lead to 4-0 at 1:59 and 5:47, respectively, of the second.

Kousal, an 18-year-old from Jihlava, Czech Republic, now has two goals and four points in five pre-season games.  The rookie forward was Spokane’s second round selection in the 2016 CHL Import Draft.

The Chiefs were 0-6 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.

Twenty-year-old Jayden Sittler made the start in net and played 28:38.  He made 13 saves in 17 chances while Matt Berlin stopped all 13 shots he faced in 31:22.

The loss dropped Spokane’s 2016 WHL Preseason record to 2-2-1-0.  The Chiefs and Tri-City Americans will play their final two games of the pre-season in a home-and-home series next Friday and Saturday.  Spokane will travel to Kennewick on September 16 while they host the Americans on Saturday, September 17 at the Spokane Arena at 2 p.m.  Tickets are on sale now at the Chiefs office or by logging onto ticketswest.com.
