Spokane Earns First Pre-Season Win of Lambert Era

Larry Brunt

The Spokane Chiefs earned their first win of the pre-season – and first under new head coach Dan Lambert – with a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Giants in Everett on Saturday afternoon.

The Giants struck first in the matinee game as overage defenseman Darian Skeoch scored at the 4:44 mark of the first period.

Spokane responded with two second period goals, each scored by third-year forward Hayden Ostir, beginning with a power play tally just 2:53 into the middle frame. The Winnipeg native scored his second at the 11:54 mark off an assist from 17-year-old defenseman Ty Smith and it proved to be the game-winner.

Veteran forward Rykr Cole added insurance off an assist from 2016-17 team captain Tyson Helgesen with 7:05 left in regulation.

In another penalty-filled affair, the Chiefs went 1-for-7 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Rookie netminder Donovan Buskey earned the start for Spokane and stopped 10 of 11 shots faced in 29:58 before Declan Hobbs took over and stopped all 18 shots faced in the remaining 30:02.

The Chiefs (1-1-0-0) continue their 2017 WHL Pre-Season schedule on Sunday afternoon in Everett, taking on the reigning WHL Champion Seattle Thunderbirds at 3 p.m.
