Biography:
Cowen was the ninth overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. He is the second highest Chief ever selected (Pat Falloon, 2nd, San Jose, 1991) and highest Chief defenseman ever selected by an NHL club. Cowen appeared in 48 games in 2008-09, scored seven goals, 21 points and was a +16. His season was cut short due to a knee injury suffered on January 30th versus the Chilliwack Bruins. Cowen’s empty net goal versus the Kitchener Rangers on May 25th, 2008 clinched the Chiefs Memorial Cup Championship. In his rookie season of 2007-08, Jared Cowen appeared in 68 games, scored four goals and 18 points. He also served as an Alternate Captain for Canada’s gold medal winning under-18 team in 2008’s Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. His +28 led all rookie defenseman in the WHL in 2007-08. Cowen had one goal and five points in 21 playoff games. Recorded his first career goal on October 5th, 2007 at Tri-City. Cowen helped Team West win the bronze medal at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Cowen finished the tournament with seven helpers in six games and was named the Player of the Game for Team West three times. Named the Chiefs Rookie of the Year and the Western Conference Scholastic Player of the Year in 2007-08. Cowen was the first overall selection in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft. In six regular season games in the 2006-07 season, Cowen was +4 with two points. Cowen also played all six playoff games in 2007. In 41 regular season games with the Saskatoon Contacts of the SMAAAHL in 2006-07 Cowen scored six goals, 22 assists and 28 points with 103 penalty minutes. Cowen played for the sixth place Team Saskatchewan at the 2007 Canadian Winter Games. Cowen debuted in a Spokane sweater on December 30th, 2006 versus Tri-City. |
