SPOKANE, Wash. – Jaret Anderson-Dolan scored a hat trick and Markson Bechtold, in his first game back from injury, scored twice but it wasn’t enough as the Chiefs fell in overtime to the visiting Victoria Royals, 6-5 on Wednesday night.

The Chiefs wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring a power play goal just 1:41 into regulation as Anderson-Dolan snapped his 11th of the season past the glove of Victoria goaltender Griffen Outhouse from the left circle. Forward Kailer Yamamoto earned an assist on the play in his first shift back after missing six games with an injury. Defenseman Ty Smith also recorded an assist to break a four-game point slump.

Spokane added to their lead at the 5:54 mark of the first as Bechtold, in his first game action since Nov. 15, scored off assists from Hayden Ostir and team captain Tyson Helgesen. Bechtold found a soft spot between the circles and whipped his shot to the left side of the net for his third of the season.

The Royals stormed right back with three-straight goals to close out the opening period, beginning with an unassisted power play goal from Jared Dmytriw at 10:37 as the third-year winger snuck a shot from the left wing past goaltender Jayden Sittler’s pad.

Regan Nagy tied it up just after the Chiefs killed off a penalty with a goal similar to Bechtold’s earlier in the period, as he found an unmarked area between the circles and snapped a shot past Sittler’s glove at the 13:50 mark.

Victoria took their first lead of the game barely 2 minutes later as Dante Hannoun took a crafty pass from team-leading scorer Matthew Phillips in the right circle and ended Sittler’s night with his 11th of the year.

After Phillips scored his Royals-leading 21st goal of the season on a power play, Bechtold struck for his second of the night to bring the Victoria lead back down to one. Czech forward Ondrej Najman skipped a perfect pass from behind the goal to Bechtold netfront, from which the 20-year-old slammed it home at the 16:49 mark.
Anderson-Dolan slid in his second goal of the night under Outhouse on a power play at the 5:55 mark of the third period to tie the game at 4-4. The Yamamoto brothers paired up for the assists on the play.

After a Marcel Ibragimov goal at the 14:05 mark of the third put the Chiefs down a goal once more, Anderson-Dolan completed the hat trick – his second in six games – with a rebound goal at the 19:01 mark to tie it up once more. The goal came after Spokane coach Don Nachbaur pulled Weatherill to give his club the 6-on-5 advantage.

The Royals took advantage of a charging minor assessed to Spokane’s Evan Fiala to score with the extra man in overtime as Phillips scored his second of the night from the left side.

The Chiefs finished the game 2-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-6 on the penalty kill. They outshot the Royals 33-22. The loss pushes Spokane’s record to 11-11-5-1 overall and 2-6 in overtime/shootouts.

Spokane remains at home on Friday night for the annual Teddy Bear Toss game presented by The Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund. Fans are encouraged to bring new stuffed animals to throw on the ice after the Chiefs score their first goal. The bears will be collected and donated back to the community via the Spokesman-Review Christmas Bureau.

Tickets for Friday night and all Chiefs home games are available in-person at the Chiefs’ Ticket Office, over the phone at 509-535-PUCK and online at ticketswest.com or spokanechiefs.com.
