Chiefs Fall Short in Overtime, 3-2 at Saskatoon

Saskatoon, Sask. – Ty Smith had a goal and an assist to extend his points scoring streak to 9 straight, but Kirby Dach’s second goal of the game 37 seconds into overtime lifted the Saskatoon Blades to a 3-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs Friday night in Saskatoon, Sask. The loss dropped the Chiefs record to 3-1-1 on their East Division road trip.

Saskatoon took a 1-0 lead in the first on an Eric Florchuk power play goal off a 5-on-3 advantage. The Chiefs would answer with a power play goal just eight seconds into their first opportunity with 1:09 left in the period to even the game at one. Luke Toporowski’s second goal of the year came off assists from Nolan Reid and Ty Smith, who extended his points scoring streak to nine-straight games.

Smith would give the Chiefs the lead with a power play goal at 7:19 of the second period to make it 2-1 Spokane. Eli Zummack and Jake McGrew got the assists on Smith’s second goal of the year. Saskatoon tied the game on a Kirby Dach goal with just 0.6 seconds left in the second to send the game to the third period tied at two. Neither team scored in the third as Spokane outshot Saskatoon 14-6 in the period.

Dach would decide the contest with his second goal of the night just 37 seconds into overtime off a rebound to hand the Chiefs their first overtime loss of the season. Bailey Brkin had 30 saves as the Chiefs outshot Saskatoon 43-33 in the contest.

The Chiefs finish their six-game road trip on Saturday at Prince Albert. Mike Boyle will have the radio call on 1510 KGA, beginning with pre-game at 5:30 p.m. PT and puck drop at 6 p.m. PT.

They return to Spokane Arena on Friday, October 26 when they take on the Portland Winterhawks for Avista “Way to Save” Night & Glow Bracelet Giveaway.
