Fourteen current or former Chiefs are back on the ice at NHL training camps this fall, including four from this year’s club.
Jack Finley, C — Tampa Bay Lightning
Finley was named one of the Chiefs’ alternate captains prior to the 2020-21 season, but was ruled out for the year following a shoulder injury in the season opener. He played 61 games during the 2019-20 season, racking up 57 points (19G-38A) and shooting 3 game-winning goals. Tampa Bay selected him in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft in June of 2020.
Bear Hughes, C — Washington Capitals
Hughes made his WHL debut March 15, 2019, and scored his first two career goals the very next night. After the 2019-20 season, he ranked seventh among WHL rookies with 47 points (16G-31A) and earned Chiefs Rookie of the Year honors. Hughes was released for the 2020-21 season to play in the USHL for the Fargo Force.
He was selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round (148th overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
Graham Sward, D — Colorado Avalanche
Sward saw limited play in 2020-21 due to injury, but ranked 117th on the final 2021 NHL Central Scouting Service Draft Rankings after the season. He played 55 games with the Chiefs in 2019-20, posting 17 points (2G-15A) in his rookie season. Sward was Spokane’s first-round (17th overall) pick in the 2018 WHL Draft.
Luke Toporowski, LW — Detroit Red Wings
Toporowski was the Chiefs’ first-round pick (8th overall) in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft and has played 196 games with Spokane, piling up 136 points (61G-75A). He spent most of the abbreviated 2020-21 season in the USHL with the Sioux Falls Stampede, where he ranked fourth on the team with 33 points (14G-19A) in 32 games. Toporowski rejoined the Chiefs for their final six games of the season and contributed four points on a goal and three assists.
