PORTLAND, Ore, — The Spokane Chiefs came up empty in the Rose City Tuesday night as they fell 5-3 at the hand of the Portland Winterhawks.
Cordel Larson got the Chiefs on the board first as he got behind the Winterhawks’ defense and sniped one over the left should of Portland net minder Dante Giannuzzi at 11:04 to make it 1-0.
The next four goals of the game were scored by the Winterhawks, scorinng twice in the first and twice in the second before Eli Zummack answered for the Chiefs, capitalizing on a slick backhand pass from winger Luke Toporowski to trim the lead to two. The goal by Zummack extended his point streak to 15 games.
Spokane came within a goal of Portland at 13:25 in the third when a net front puck deflected in off the skate of Jack Finley to make it 4-3. The Chiefs were unable to tie things up down the stretch as the Winterhawks added an empty-netter and went on to claim the victory by a score of 5-3. Minnesota Wild prospect Adam Beckman, who last game set a franchise record with a goal in his 10th straight game, recorded a pair of assists and earned the game’s third star, but failed to register a marker.
Lukas Parik tended the Chiefs’ net in his return from World Juniors and was 33-of-37. Giannuzzi ended the night 25-of-28 for Portland. Spokane went 0-f0r-3 on the power play while Portland was 1-for-2.
The Chiefs return home Friday, January 10 to take on the Vancouver Giants.
