Penalties Problematic In Pre-Season Premier
Larry Brunt

The Spokane Chiefs dropped the first game of their 2017 WHL Pre-Season schedule, losing 7-3 to the Portland Winterhawks on Friday afternoon in Everett.

Early season rust was apparent for the Chiefs as they gave the Winterhawks nine power play chances, four of which the Hawks capitalized on for a goal, including two 5-on-3 goals in the second period. Things settled down in the third period as each team scored twice.

Kailer Yamamoto, in his first game action as a Chief since being drafted 22nd overall by Edmonton in this summer’s NHL Entry Draft, earned a goal and an assist to lead the Spokane offense. Sixteen-year-old defenseman Eric Van Impe earned the first pre-season point of his career with an assist.

The Chiefs (0-1-0-0) continue their pre-season slate on Saturday in Everett, taking on the Vancouver Giants (1-0-0-0) at 3 p.m.
