Chiefs Open Long Road Trip with 4-1 Win over Swift Current
Swift Current, Sask. — The Spokane Chiefs opened their six-game road trip through the East Division with a 4-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night. Bailey Brkin made 28 saves for the Chiefs to earn first star honors.
Spokane opened the scoring late in the first as Eli Zummack redirected a Bobby Russell shot from the left side back across to the top-right corner for his second goal of the season. Ty Smith extended his point streak to five games with his eighth assist of the season.
The Chiefs added their second of the night midway through the second as Carter Chorney deflected in a goal of his own – his second of the year – past Swift Current netminder Isaac Poulter.
Jake McGrew extended the lead to 3-0 at 11:26 of the third period, driving to the right post to finish a beautiful centering feed from linemate Riley Woods for his fifth goal of the year.
After Swift Current’s Noah King broke the shutout with 4:16 left in regulation, McGrew then found Woods down the middle of the ice to backhand in an empty netter and seal the game.
Spokane finished 0-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. The Chiefs outshot the Broncos 48-29, including 24-10 in the first period.
